Construction on the new aquatics and community centre will be starting in May 2020.

Construction Overview

The new aquatics and community centre will be built where the Sixth Avenue parking lot is currently located. This site location was selected to allow for Canada Games Pool and Centennial Community Centre to remain open during construction. Additionally, this site accounts for other site constraints including the presence of a large diameter Metro Vancouver sewer main that traverses the site.

Safety is a top priority throughout construction. To ensure the safety of the public, we ask that everyone obey all construction signage and access facilities from designated entrances only. Please note that as construction progresses, restricted areas may change or move.

Programs & Services

All programs and services will continue as advertised during the construction period.

Facility users are reminded to arrive early for lessons and programs as parking will be limited and additional time may be required to walk from alternate parking locations.

Access

Pedestrians can access the existing facilities from East Sixth Avenue near the east lawn, from Cumberland Street, and from the JIBC parking lot.

There will be no access to Centennial Community Centre from the south entrance during construction. All users will need to use the north entrance near the playground.

Phase 1 – Site Servicing and Utility Relocation

  • Summer 2020: Phase 1 excavation & construction
  • Winter 2023: NWACC opening & Phase 2 demolition

During construction, there will be no access to the Sixth Avenue parking lot.

On-site parking is available in the Cumberland Street parking lot. Parking is limited to three hours and will be strictly enforced.

Facility users are reminded to arrive early for lessons and programs as parking will be limited and additional time may be required to walk from alternate parking locations.

We encourage you to consider alternate modes of transportation such as walking, cycling, transit, and carpooling.
