It’s clear that the construction of təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre is in the home stretch as all the spaces are becoming more fully realized! All areas of the building are close to complete and staff are busy preparing for the opening next spring.

Construction Progress

Community Centre

The west side of the new building is almost complete with only the installation of the main gym flooring, touch-ups, HVAC commissioning, and deficiency work remaining. New furniture and fitness equipment have been ordered and are set to be delivered in early 2024. In the central double-height lobby, which was conceived as the community’s “living room”, final touches are being done on the spiral feature staircase and reception millwork. At the end of the year, the community centre portion of the facility will be thoroughly inspected and tested to ensure all components, equipment, and systems are functioning correctly and ready for opening.

Leisure and Competition Pools

The 50-metre competition pool, leisure pool, and both hot pools have passed flood testing. The tile work in the natatorium area is significant! The family hot pool was the first water basin to be fully tiled. Tile installation on the competition pool and the adult hot pool is in progress and deck tiling is expected to start soon. Completion of all tile work is anticipated in the next few months with crews focusing on quality and durability to cater to the high-usage requirements of the facility. Storage lockers have been installed in the change area with the space nearly complete.

Exterior Site Work

Outside of the facility, hardscaping is complete at the southern end. At the north end, the concrete plaza outside the gymnasiums and the central atrium entryway is also complete. The majority of the soft landscaping and planting is complete on the south side of the building with the remaining work being completed over the coming months. The playground equipment, which features a rubberized surface with a climber, spinning element, and play dome has been installed. The playground will serve the childcare facility as well as the public. The site for the new public art piece is complete; however, the installation and unveiling of the piece are planned for later next spring.

Centennial Community Centre

The community said goodbye to Centennial Community Centre at a farewell event in early November. The facility is now closed and equipment has been moved into storage at the new facility. Abatement work is beginning soon and demolition is expected to take place in early 2024.
